Such a great film,Naomi.I dont cry at films, but when Joe Gargery says to Pip"what larks,Pip,what larks"i cry like a baby.Surely the best British film ever made.
Question Author
Dickens created thousands of characters for his novels, but none as caring and thoughtful and loving as Joe Gargery.
Painful, really painful. So hurtful to the dear man. Poor Joe.
Some roles/films withstand any attempts at remakes and this is surely one of them, a sheer delight to watch.
I really think with some films they shouldn’t even try. I recall watching a remake of Little Women where the girls were saying things like ‘yeah right’ and ‘as if’. Those writers should never set pen to paper again.
Probably the greatest Dickens screen adaptation. Alec Guinness' first speaking role on film. He speaks of it with great fondness in his autobiograpy.
Joe Gargery, brilliantly played by Bernard Miles.
The only time I seen it was on the last day we broke up before Christmas one year at junior school, many decades ago.

No idea how the head got a copy of it or thought it a good idea to show it.
Was that between English grammar lessons then Corby?
Which channel was it on?
Wish I'd known it was on, I would have recorded it.
Finlay Currie (Magwitch) I used to drink with him at 'The Iverheath Studio Club' in Pinewood studios - he couldn't half put the hard stuff away! :0)
Me too Shirley.
I'm hoping someone can tell me when it's on to see if I can watch on catch up or a later date.
Don't know if it was on the TV or not.
I just did a quick search and there’s an updated version available that warns of strong language. Sigh….
I suspect it was on Channel 81 - Talking Pictures.
David Lean filmed an atmospheric version of Oliver Twist a couple of years later. And Lawrence of Arabia.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen it. It’s a long film isn’t it?
no, less than two hours. (That's with the chainsaw killings and the mass nude scenes removed.)
