The Duke of Kent is 87 this year, having become duke at the tender age of 7. He has been a loyal supporter of the Queen over the years, often in the background. He has deputised for Prince Philip when he was too ill to accompany the Queen. It was the Queen's choice to have a family member there and she chose her cousin, had he not felt well enough to attend I'm sure he would have said so - they are close.

There was a little bit, but as they were married before she converted the Duke was not excluded fro the order of succession, unlike his brother, Prince Michael, who married an RC. Prince Michael was restored to the succession after a change in the law in 2013.
