"BBC Two's Mastermind presented by new host Clive Myrie is particularly interested in receiving applications from under-represented groups for the next series!"

Should they not take applications equally from everyone that applies?

As far as I can see no one is discouraging anyone from applying - simply saying that the selection process shouldn’t involve ethnicity.

I just don't get it. All Myrie is doing is encouraging a wider demographic to apply. He's not at any stage stated that they have more chance of being selected or that the questions would be simplified, that's just the conclusion some on this thread have jumped to.

When push comes to shove, if the questions do appear easier, it will be apparent to anybody watching. Until then, everybody has an even chance of winning.
if people apply and get through, does it matter what ethnicity they are. its a quiz programme, one i seldom watch now admittedly
I don't watch it either Emms, catch the last few minutes when watching Only Connect, but I don't see the harm in trying to encourage the full range of people and ethnicities to join in. If there is a shortage of BAME applications, then encourage more to apply. That doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I'd say exactly the same if we were talking about women or folk with disabilities.
whenever i have watched it - its usually the celeb edition, they usually do get a mixture of people on that.
Yeah, the celeb ones can be utter embarrassing to watch. Not because of that, just the standard of intelligence can be somewhat lacking. I'm not sure what the diversity on the real show is like, but encouraging different types of people to apply is no bad thing in any walk of life, all the time one isn't favoured over another in final selection.
perhaps Black and ethnic minorities don't think they would get through, so don't apply, i just don't know.
I suspect you're right Emms. They need to realise you have to be in it to win it so to speak.
you do, im not clever enough to enter, my GK is ok but remembering a specialist subject is terribly hard, and if you manage to get through you have to learn all about another or more....
I'm not too bad at answering the GK questions from my sofa, but I suspect the pressure of doing it in front of a studio audience is quite a different thing. I'm much happier if I get an Only Connect answer before the contestants. Especially on the wall.
i have watched only connect, but not regularly.
I'm an addict lol
i like The Chase when there is nothing else on, that can be quite a tough quiz show.
I'm not really a fan. I used to like Pointless, but I'm fairly meh about it now. There isn't much "must watch" TV on the five main stations in my view nowadays.
Why is everyone still using the archaic term BAME?

Get with it you dinosaurs.
fgs, what should it be.
Apart from replacing a "g" for my "f", Emms ' question is exactly the same as mine would've been.
Well, a quick Google tells me that BAME is now considered racist as it lumps all other minorities together. *sighs*

Not one article I saw gives an alternative term to use, so it's damned if we do, damned if we dont it seems.
sick of that BAME Botox. If people want to enter MasterMind then good for them what ever their ethnicity.
Yup, that's the crux of the discussion.
The vast majority of competitive sprinters are black, the vast majority of competitive swimmers are white. How do we fix that?
