People of a certain age will recall the original 1990s series and its romance and marriage of Mariette, played by Catherine Zeta Jones, and Charlie the tax collector played by Philip Franks. In this remake, Charlie will be played by black actor Tok Stephens. How sizeable would the black population and how common mixed race marriages have been in Kent in the 1950s?

Used to love that.
can't wait
no idea, but suggest not many.. it would have been frowned upon then, i know because even when i was in a mixed relationship in the 70's it was not thought right.
but this is tv trying to be inclusive i suppose
Does it really matter? Bridgerton has been a smash hit and that was set in the early 19th century.

....and that bears no resemblance to real life either
personally i wish they hadn't remade this, the original was jolly and good fun, can Bradley handle the light heartedness of the original..i wonder.
They just can't leave well alone. Which part are they going to make disabled?
no idea, i doubt if i will watch, though i did like the original.
I find remakes are usually inferior to the original. Why do it?
new audience perhaps, it was a while ago now..
I never really cared for this, so won't be watching the remake.
I told my sister I was watching an episode of Frost - she said "I don't like David Jason." I was shocked!
Would watch the old series if it was replayed, why try and reinvent the wheel, maybes it's just my age.
Think you might be right emmie
I was disappointed with the original series, particularly with David Jason cast as Pop; having read all the books he just didn't fit my image of Pop Larkin.
Who cannot like David Jason, a long and illustrious career IMO

yes bhg I find its the same with many book adaptations, you have to watch the adapation as though its a different thing and nothing to do with the book. The George Gently books for instance are very different from the series.
I never watched the original as it didn't appeal to me.
I really enjoyed the original at the time...I don't think it has aged well though. Same with All Creatures....and I did enjoy the new All Creatures series.
