Have it in about 2 to 3 weeks now - and have noticed that programmes that I could see on my ordinary Sky - eg, Sky Documentaries, Sky Atlantic, Sky Comedy etc - if it goes into Catchup and if I want to look at them - it says at the top to upgrade my package.

Now, do you have to pay for Catchup. which I don't want to do as I'm paying enough.

i know nothing about sky but can't you just record them?
Question Author
yes I can (I hope) like I was able to record them when in ordinary Sky but Ael I was unaware re the Catchup. I'll try and record some of the Sky and see what happens.

If I am able to record Sky progs what is the point of Catchup, I see people on here - oh I'll watch on Catchup.
i only use catchup if i forget to record a programme or it fails to record

I’ve recently had SkyQ. Plus addition of mini box in another room Kept all packages Plus catch up Netflix Prime and others for £2 more per month.
Question Author
mag - I only wanted the basic package so are you saying you can get Netflix for £2 a month on what you pay per month - or if you want

The basic question is do all users of SkyQ pay for Catchup.
Question Author
Mag - if you don't mind - for all those packages how much are you paying a month, that would give me an idea of what I'm paying for. Thanks
I don’t have SkyQ just a Sky+ box, but I can watch all the Catch up programs for free. I have the basic package and pay £17 per month. I was offered SkyQ, but didn’t fancy it. Any channel you can watch for free, would also be free on catch up, so it doesn’t make sense you are being asked to pay.
When I have a problem with Sky I always phone their customer services, which are very good and always UK based operatives, who are easy to understand. I know this is a problem for you jj, but is there an online chat?
If you moan about the cost when they have sorted your problem out, you can sometimes get your bill reduced too.
PS. If you do phone you get a message threatening a 20 minute wait, but I have never waited more than about 3 minutes (long time customer apparently).
Could it be that your package only covers SD programmes and you are trying to catch up HD programmes?
Question Author
no Barry - they were Sky programmes on the Sky+ that I always could record - mind you - haven't recorded what I';m talking about - Sky Docs, Sky Atlantic so I'll give that a go - thanks ie record

I;m paying £25 for this basic package whereas with the Sky+ I was paying £38 - I will try and record tonight from the Sky and yes I have "chatted" to them before and it was quick enough.
Sky Atlantic broadcasts in standard definition and high definition - both show exactly the same programmes. Are you sure you can watch Sky Atlantic in HD live?
From a web search:
"go to >setting>Setup> Preferences>ondemad default format > chose SD"

Question Author
well have just finished cleaning the house - and started to record all the Sky Arts, Atlantic, Docs, Comedy etc and they all recorded so that'll do me -

do think if I want Catchup and Demand it would be more money but I do have enough now.
My family just got the skyq box installed today.
With the remote ... go to settings.
Choose ... Set Up.
Choose ... Preferences.
Choose ... On Demand.
There choose SD in the "on demand format" option.

The Q box is trying to view in HD( that is it's default setting) but if you have the basic package it does not provide HD.
Question Author
right - know now what you were referring but followed Togo's instructions.

First of all I was on HD (High Definition) and changed to Standard Definition.

Then when I went back to the OnDemand or Catchup (can't remember now) there were or are they box sets of say The Gangs of London (looked at that like a second) but too afraid, then I saw Mildred Pierce - it lets you download and allows me to watch.

Thanks Guys - is Catch Up and On Demand the one thing? Or do you have to do something on Catch Up too. I'm learning every day.
On Sky Q, catch up is accessed by just scrolling down. It’s one of the first things you come across. We are on a fairly basic package and we have it.
Question Author
pardon me for being stupid - but what exactly does catch up mean - I mean you can't type exactly what you want to catch up on or is it just like "this is what we offer" take your pick.
“Catch up” allows you to “catch up” with programmes which are still available to watch. Unfortunately these expire after a certain time unlike your recordings. “On demand” is sort of like hiring a video. Whether you can watch a given programme (eg Netflix) depends on what you’ve paid for
Question Author
thanks Ich - that solves the riddle - I thought you could "choose" your catchup not that I'm fussed about that, but you certainly learn a little something everyday re SkyQ
