Does anybody watch The Joy of Painting, BBC Four, Monday to Thursday, 7.30 p.m.? It's a relaxing half-hour watching this artist create a landscape. He doesn't try to be a comedian, he just concentrates on his picture and explains what he is doing.

//What's a pot boiler?//

Something quick and easy to make money between "proper" jobs.

Like an author writing for Mills & Boon or an actor doing adverts.
Tigger - Nancy Komknsky - she never used a brush, only a pallette knife.
Ah yes, Nancy Kominsky. I was mesmerized by her style of painting, as a kid.
Corby beat me to it :-(
Mozz - cheers mate :-)
APG, that painting is not signed by Ross and it has the initials "KA" in the corner.
As long as I like a painting, I don't care who painted it. We all have different tastes, so I would never call an artist dreadful. But seeing the one painting he did on television and the example APG gives, I definitely don't like his style. Nothing draws me to his pictures at all. They look clumsy and unbalanced. Most of my own pictures are done my family members. My Mum was great, OH's dad produced some good stuff and my great grandmothers work was displayed frequently in art galleries. I used to be quite good, but have no inclination to draw or paint any more.
I wish I had some talent.
Well I would call an artist dreadful if I don't like the picture and I think its amateurish. If he was just someone at a night school enjoying themselves that would be different but he teaches people to paint!
To start to paint. Many many will end up much better than him.
I wouldn't lose too much sleep about it

Either 'you' like watching him or 'you ' don't .
lots of people do .

There are far important matters to be concerned about ,currently
Well, he seems to be a one trick pony and lover of fir trees and mountains.
My wife took up painting almost 4 years ago and now successfully sells her works at craft fairs; she'll watch Bob Ross videos for hours, not for the finished article but to learn about techniques, use of colours, etc.
I remember watching Painting With Nancy - usually when I was home for my dinner (never had a school dinner in all my time at primary school!)
Apc’s link reminds me of the awful pictures my granny and great aunts had back in the 70s. I have no talent for art myself, so don’t like to be too disparaging.
Am I right that Bob Ross gets his effects from special brushes that can only be bought from him ? I dont know where I heard this - hope I'm wrong.
I think he is fantastic. I used to watch him years ago..

Here's someone inspirational - Cornwall's top living artist - £50k for one of those large originals but well worth a google after this, his seascapes of Cornwall and the Scillies fabulous.....

Theland, a pot-boiler is a work that you churn out to keep the pot full of food. All artists try to earn money from their work, so it's not really a pejorative term, although it is used that way, a bit like "woke".
I used to like watching him. Gives ideas on how to get the effects you could be looking for and it was a nice peaceful half hour. Agree with THECORBYLOON though about the link. I don't think Bob did this one as he always signs his paintings with his name at the bottom of them and that one has someone elses initials so not one of Bobs or his son who took over from him.
