Dr Valter Longo, in his book 'The Longevity Diet' comes to the conclusion that if you have long life in your genes, you can more or less do what you like. He writes about the case of a lady who gave up smoking at 102 only because her eyesight had failed and she couldn't light up, and was too independent to allow others to light up for her.

I really don't see what is unfortunate about her not quitting smoking at 93
I don’t know about Covid and cigs, but why give up now at the age of 93 when she enjoys it?

My granny gave up at the age 79 because she physically couldn’t breathe strongly enough to get the stuff into her lungs. Too late by then.

at 93 quitting..pointless, goes to show, some smokers seem immune to cancer..perhaps they coud study why that is.
Earlier this year there were several articles hinting that smokers had some protection against Covid (although suffered more if they caught it). I don't know if it was fake news or now buried news.
My grandparents smoked like chimneys and died of heart disease at 79. My mum smoked about one cig a month and died horribly of cancer.

Worth more studying, I think.

I read that too, Prudie but it was early on. I wonder what the figures are now. How are you coping with no menthol?
Gness after reading all the suggestions on that thread I posted I'm doing OK by buying the specific Green Filter cigarettes (which both my local shops sell) and using the Rizla menthol infused cards. Almost perfect except you have to remember to set the next packet up all the time as it takes a minimum of an hour to work and in reality longer.
Haven't tried that, Prudie. Coping okay with Mayfair Sea Green. Sometimes pop them in a jar with menthol crystals for an extra kick needed when they announce the pubs must close again.... ;-)
For years I used to fetch my mum's neighbour 80 fags a week. She was in her early 90's. Doctors repeatedly told her to pack it in as it wasnt good for her health? (she was in very good health)
A few weeks ago she went into a home where they couldnt smoke.
Would like to see how that pans out....

I packed in smoking a few years ago, although now addicted to niccorrete chewing gum.
Couldn't touch a fag now though to save my life (no pun intended)

Question Author
as a smoker myself, i digress it's difficult to quit, as i like it, probably the nicotine telling me that, its a very odd thing..smoking.
I started smoking because it looked cool. Think James Dean. I want to light up right now thinking about him.

I loved my Marlboro Light fag packet next to the casino’s gold and white match book.
I haven't smoked since 1984 but when I was diagnosed with severe COPD recently I was told the main cause is smoking. The likelihood of developing COPD increases the more you smoke and the longer you've smoked. I was also told my lung cancer was NOT caused by smoking. So there you go:-)
Why would anyone advise a woman aged 93 to quit smoking? Only those who think longevity is the only thing that matters.

is not new and is based in the strongest determinant of your life span is the average at which your parents died - actuaries have known this for a long time - old actuaries know this ......

blood pressure and diabetes then become second ( ignoring things like HIV or ebola)
