I was going to buy a Kindle, but instead installed the Kindle app.on my Samsung tablet which seems to work very well..can anyone tell me if this is a good idea, is it a lot better to use a Kindle, do I get more benefits or is there no difference?

The software is slightly different but that's all. I have got kindle on my ipad and an actual kindle. The kindle is better if you just want to read, its much lighter and more compact, but if I am going out and want the tablet functions as well as books then i take my ipad. Oh and I find the kindle screen better in sunlight, but its a paperwhite.

Yes. Why have a Kindle when you can use a tablet? No advantage at all on a Kindle - I had both, but gave the Kindle away.
A kindle does one job very well.
A Tablet does many jobs, often very well.
A Kindle Fire is a tablet. I really liked the Kindle. I only used it to browse the net, watch films and youtube clips...as I do my laptop. I never used it for books.
A Kindle doesn’t handle PDFs well; a tablet with Kibdle app does.
for me its the tablet screen in sunlight and the weight of a tablet that are the balance tippers. I have both and use both.
my kindle is fine with pdf's

Thank you everyone for your help. because of answers I have just saved myself a lot of money in staying with Kindle app.on tablet..the only difference I can see is the tablet is heavier than a Kindle, but that's no problem.
I have the kindle app on my phone, android tablet and iPad but for reading I much prefer to use my Kindle. Far lighter to hold, much more comfortable to read in bed and the battery just keeps going and going.
