We've had a Virgin media tv internet package for the last 15 years but no longer do we watch hardly anything apart from main stream tv. But still having the choice with a cheaper way of doing it would be an idea.
So over that time i have ignored anything that has evolved since, such as firesticks. I'm a bit of a techno dunce so need a bit of advice.
Can you view the normal 5 main stream channels on say the amazon 4k firestick which looks a decent investment?
Any other alternative suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance.

You can only view those 5 channels via apps. So BBC Iplayer and ITV hub have the option to watch their channels live. But C4 and C5 only have catch up, not live TV, on their apps.
If you view the apps online you will be able to see what content you will get
Yes you can watch the norm channel on the fire stick. And unless you have Amazon prime, it is not much different.
You can download Mobdro and Popcorn to get more channels.
You would have your normal mainstream channels on your tv or free view whatever you have. A fire stick you can download the apps to watch tv on internet and catchup tv just turns a normal tv into a smart one. Never miss a program always get it on the fire stick apps.

Er, doesn't that assume that Dajstar has got a terrestrial aerial on the roof of his house (to receive Freeview) or else a satellite dish on his wall (to receive Freesat)?

That does seem the obvious way to go anyway though. i.e. to either use an existing terrestrial TV aerial or to get one installed.
Can Dajstar just keep his Virgin box and use it as Freeview?
