Did anyone watch the BBC2 drama Responsible Child? Found it quite disturbing. Apparently in England and Wales a 10 year old is too young to buy a hamster but can be tried for murder. Would be interested to see what others thought.

Yes, we watched it. Very disturbing. I think 10 is too young an age to be tried for murder. Especially after watching that drama last night.
I didn't see it... but 10 is the age of criminal responsibility, old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. I'm not sure how that relates to being responsible for an animal.
I found it compelling and thought provoking - but uncomfortable. Does anyone know what his sentence was? I can't recall hearing it.
Pixie, I think the boy involved doubtless knew right from wrong.
The age of criminal responsibility in Scotland was eight until the last month when it was raised to twelve.
The awful thing was, I suppose, was that I was rather pleased the brute had been killed. Hmmm....awful or justified? I don't know. Mixed emotions.
Obvious both psychologically damaged, yet again because of a man...
The 10 year old seemed to want to protect and look after his older brother, whom he thought a lot of. There was a lot of deep hurt and anger there. Very sad.
Didn't the age get lowered after James Bulger?
It has been 10 since the 1960s x
In the case it was based on the boy was older (14 I think) and got 6 years.
Just put it on. It was the 60s. Everyday is a school day!
THIS 0NE-0FF FICTI0NAL DRAMA WAS N0T BASED 0N A PARTICULAR TRUE ST0RY, RATHER SEVERAL SIMILAR CASES WHERE A CHILD HAS BEEN CHARGED AS AN ADULT. PR0BABLY WHY THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE THE SENTENCING BEF0RE THE END CREDITS.
I stand corrected ken, I didn't read an article fully enough obviously, thank you.
Brilliant young actor.
He was Ummmm.
That was a bit heart wrenching.

Over 7,000 kids convicted between the age of 10 and 14.
Although not an exact representation, the drama is based on the case of Jerome Ellis, as has been stated by the screenwriter Sean Buckley and director Nick Holt.

Thanks for that, AB.

He was a really good actor.

It's well worth a watch.
The figure of 7,000 refers to those tried, not those found guilty.
I thought it said convicted.
