i will persevere, its a very imaginative story, though i haven't read the book. Perhaps i should and then all would be a bit clearer.
I'm a huge fan of the books (His Dark Materials is the overall name of a trilogy of novels: think Lord of the Rings), so would recommend them if you are a fan of Fantasy literature. Last night was very much an introduction episode, more to get you used to Lyra's Oxford than anything else. Although I don't know how much is being adapted (I suspect this series will only cover book one, The Golden Compass), I think there is plenty to look forward to, especially the bears.

Mozz am a big fan of fantasy, Lord of the Rings is my go to book when i am all out of things to read. Perhaps will see if i can't get the trilogy.
I watched and hugely admired the production values, but the genre isnt for me, maybe more suited to a family viewing.
I really disliked the books, very preachy and up himself. Don't plan to watch the TV program.
I thought last night's episode was a tad slow but i fully realise that we were being introduced to some of the main players. I am into fantasy in a big way - Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' series of books are the reason why language was invented, imho - and have looked forward to this series. Good to see Anne Marie Duff and James McAvoy in the same production once again.
as usual poor sound, couldn't hear half of what James McAvoy was "mumbling" about, and yes, i have a very good sound system,
Watched and enjoyed it. Not my usual genre but will persevere beyond the "scene setting".
Derek 33 - perhaps using sub-titles would help you?
Emmie, Im a huge fan of Tolkien too, i think I'm on my third copy of Lord of the Rings, having worn out previous ones over the last 30 years. The books aren't a prose-y as Tolkien's book, and are very much aimed at a younger audience. They're more like an athiest version of the Narnia books. They're certainly worth reading, and easy to get in a single volume edition, so you don't have to pay out for them separately.

Derek, maybe you should use subtitles. I SAID MAYBE YOU SHOULD... ;-)
Hubby found it interesting. I really don't like fantasy, but watched it for about 10 minutes which confirmed I don't like fantasy (or scidnce fiction).
I haven't read the books but I felt as a foundation episode it gripped me as much as I hoped.
I have to admit, the show's depictions of Pan and the other daemons is superb. The fluidity of the form of the kids' daemons was lifted perfectly from the books.
I totally agree with Derek-33.
The books were superb & the programme was excellent, really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Sorry derek-33, your loss.
I read the first three books some time ago. I see since then that "The Book of Dust" has been released in two volumes - anybody read that?
