...playing in the lawyer's study? This is BBC2's "Rise of Hitler" program on tonight at 9.00 pm.

I recognise, but frustratingly can't recall where it comes from. Is it Mozart?

Recognise it but am dreadful at dredging up titles, subtitles are useless too - 'German Operatic Music'.

Someone will know.
Question Author
Yup, I saw the "operatic" in the subtitle, Mamya, but when first hearing it without the text it sounded more obviously devotional. Which doesn't rule Mozart out of course.
Possibly from Tannhauser, that's mentioned in the credits?
is it this ?
Question Author
Didn't sound very Wagnerian, Mamya. But am still watching it. Haven't got to the credits.

Do recognise a Beethoven piano sonata which reoccurs. I think it's the Apassionata.

Where's Mikey when you need him?

Hey, mate, we need a bit of help down here.
Question Author
No, Johnny, it's a bit older than that.
More likely Bach or Handel. I know the piece but can't instantly place it.
Very famous piece can't put me finger on it but it's used in many films.
Chopin - Nocturnes, Op. 9: No. 2 in E-flat major ?
Debussy - Suite Bergamasque, L. 75: III. Clair de Lune ?
Well done Jim

Lascia ch'io pianga
I mean it doesn't even sound like Debussy or Chopin :/
Question Author
Thanks, Jim. Wiki tells me that Handel wrote Almira when he was just nineteen.
Not Chas & Dave then, no?
You're welcome. A good deal of luck that I found it so quickly. Parents both agreed that it was Handel, but couldn't think of the piece. I thought it was a ClassicFM staple so checked the Hall of Fame, and there it was in this year's list (under Rinaldo, although as you say Handel had composed the tune earlier). But it wasn't in the 2018 list, so a little lucky that it was a re-entry.
Well found Jim.
