Living in London during the Second World War, my father never bothered using the air-raid shelter – he said that if a bomb had your name on it, there was nothing you could do about it.

This greatly worried our neighbours, Mr & Mrs Doodle-bug.

My mother said they never went in the air raid shelters. And they lived right next to a railway line which ran out Thompson St goods yard in Manchester, now a Chinese restuarant and fire station.
