I have an 18y pakistani girl jr in the salon. She has no tv, no cell phone but wears western clothes ie leggings & shirts. Knows owt about films but she's polite, friendly & a good worker.
It can be and is a problem when areas get ghettoised and schools therefore too.

I haven't much room to talk , my own children and now my grandchildren attend/ed RC Schools - some pupils are from overseas but not many.

However all of them have many outside interests where they mingle with a broader range of young people and know there are different cultures at play - they don't know everything, that will come as they grow and learn themselves, but the ground work has been done.
But maybe, Tamborine, she didn't grow up in an area where the main street was described on the programme by a resident as 'just like being in Pakistan'. This was considered a very good thing.

Around the 80s I had pakistanis ladies sewing for me. They were very western & I took patterns into their houses & met their families. Now theyre all closetted since imams were imported.
What a wonderful advert for and microcosm of multicultural Britain eh?

//What a wonderful advert for and microcosm of multicultural Britain eh?//

Ironically phrased, perhaps.

But a good question?
To simplify the question for the stupids: for a society (i.e all of us) to be successful and get on well, ought we not agree about some fundamental values = moral standards = don't like child brides = don't like bearded gits with four wives under sixteen.

This ought not be a difficult question to ask. A pretty obvious one/
I booked a holiday to India but my OH said "go to Southall, its cheaper". I took my son instead.
Are you saying we have " bearded gits with four wives under sixteen" in this country, V-E, or just saying we should intervene to ensure it doesn't happen in other countries?.
//Between 2011 and 2012 the government’s Forced Marriage Unit provided assistance to 400 children. The Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation in the UK reportedly deals with more than 100 cases of forced marriage a year, with some of the youngest clients being 11 and 12 years old.//

So we don't turn a blind eye and it seems we do have some fundamental values on these issues. As with all crimes there will be some that do not respect the law, and there are some social values we teach in school that some will not follow. It's not easy to tackle is it.
I'm sitting here humming 'We Are The World' and shaking my head in sad disbelief, not for the first time.
>yeah, wasn't a great song was it. Unbelievable it got to number one
fiction-factory I think the fundamental problem in tackling issues such as this is the initiative to promote social cohesion - which so often encourages denial.

One thing that was mentioned which i loved.

Adults have failed to integrate and get along, but kids, they're open minded, they're not too late to be able to merge with these people and get along. This is the future generation.. Our hope, our future.
Question Author
"The reason for that initially lies at home.
"

Jhee ya can tell that by some of the parents how they reacted. The mother of the very bright ginger chap seemed completely oblivious to the Pakistani culture.
I had no intention of watching this and from some of the comments here, I'm glad I didn't.

it's an eye opener.
It wasn't 't just the Birmingham pupils who were ignorant and had contempt for the national anthem.
