Does anybody know if everyone in the audience HAS to vote whether they know the answer or not? Or do they have the option to not press their buzzer if they don't know?

I'm sure this question has been asked here before - and the answer was yes, the audience is required to press the buzzer regardless of whether they know the answer or not.
I've often wondered why anyone would want to be in the audience for this - to watch someone else win lots of money. No thanks!
There are armed watchtowers all around the auditorium. Anyone not pressing their buzzer within the allotted time is brought down in a hail of bullets.

Thanks Naomi, it might have been me! I was trying to remember if I'd asked it. How awful having to vote when you have no idea of the answer thus possibly misleading the contestant. I'd hate that.
gg is there a difference being in the audience and watching them win, rather than watching the same at home? I'm pleased for them when they win. You must be as well aren't you?
I wouldn't like it either, lb. Big responsibility!

I love it when they win!!
In reply ti The Chair 23.45 last night.I didn't realise that the Jehovah's witness sect had taken over security at WWTBAM.
They should have a "I havent got a clue" button to avoid misleading the contestant like they did last night.
I think i read that there was a contestant that asked the audience not to vote unless they knew the answer, but Chris said everyone must vote to make the result 100%.

Good idea c@c. It would give the contestant more chance of getting the right answer even though some people will be wrong. But then I suppose that is not the aim of the producers to make it easier for contestants to win.
Thanks for that Darcey. Not being a regular viewer I hadn't seen that.
Chair and grumpy - behave yourselves;-))

Well done C@C. Ought we to hold out breath I wonder?
Do some people deliberately give the wrong answer because some of them are way out.
I think Ask The Audience is the best lifeline. It's so often wasted.

For a really difficult question, if you Ask The Audience and three answers get less than 25%, it's highly likely that the fourth answer is correct - even if it only got something like 28%.

Things get very dodgy when two answers have more than 25%, e.g. 33%, 40%, 17%, 10% ... bad; 28%, 24%, 24%, 24%... good.
