I think we may learn more about this bizarre series of events. The courts and newspapers were still remarkably deferential, at the time, and old allegiances will not hold in the same way. I will be watching with great interest.

I remember it too. I loathe programs that muckrake....especially when they carry the caveate "based on".....means we made a lot of this up as we went along"
Yes. I think it will be fascinating. Like Woofgang, I remember it too from the actual incidents.
I particularly loved Peter Cook’s impression of the extremely biased judge in the case.
I don't remember it but I do enjoy H Grant so will watch it on that basis alone.
I remember the trial being postponed to allow Thorpe to contest the 1979 election. He lost his seat.
It gets a very good write-up in Radio Times...Hugh Grant and Ben Wishaw are both excellent, apparently....(B.W. always is, imo).

I was at school at the time so I wouldn't have usually taken much notice but he was our local MP so there was lots of coverage on local TV. I used to see him in town with his second wife (Marion, I think) The local hospital has a ward named after his first wife who died in a car crash. He had a bit of a tragic life by all accounts
What year was this?

Late 70s but I think some things might have gone on a lot earlier
Russell T Davies was very good in interview the other night about his part in the screen writing for this, so yes I am going to give it a fair viewing.
ahhhh that explains why I don't remember it - I'm too young.
it was a cause célèbre at the time... will watch it.. being gay was not so readily accepted then and caused quite a flutter midst the mix

"being gay was not so readily accepted then"....quite the understatement!
Worth a watch I'm sure.
Historically it's interesting to see just how much power and influence The Establishment had in those days, over the press particularly.

It was simply not thought possible that someone like Thorpe could be a liar, and worse, a homosexual, and a lot of chicanery went on behind the scenes to protect the guilty.

It was of its time, both in terms of the scandal caused, and the way in which it was dealt with, and reported, and younger viewers will be amazed at what 'went on' back then. For us who were there, it was simply normal life.
Reminder, if you want to watch....
9pm tonight BBC1, first of three parts...
