Last night I made, for the first time ever, a Thai Green chicken curry. That was going well.

I took a previously opened box of Thai sticky rice from the cupboard and got out my scales to weigh the amount. When I poured the rice into the weighing pan, I noticed lots of little black flecks on the surface of the rice. Initially, I thought it may have been husks but I decided to leave it in the weighing pan for a while and see what happened. All the black specks disappeared. They had burrowed down under the surface!

Fortunately, I had some different, uncontaminated rice and cooked that.

The other box went in the bin!

I have just spent a delightful ten minutes researching rice and cereal pests. That was amusing.

Can happen :-( Wonder if they got into your box when you opened it, or, heaven forbid, were there all the time.

Maybe airtight Tupperware (or similar) is the way to go ?
That's the protein
Probably all good protein anyway.
Sooo... what were those creatures?
Question Author
It could have been a number of them, Jahulaye. I really don't know.

All my other packets of rice are in a tupperware container. This was one that was tucked away, forgotten, at the back of the cupboard. I won't do that again. It was very disconcerting!
Reminds me of a vampire movie when they’re eating rice and when he looks back at the box it’s wriggling maggots, ewwww
Question Author
The way they disappeared! It was like a magic trick.
oh God I wish I’d never googled this now

Question Author
Exactly, Jahulaye. Horrible isn't it?
Question Author
Actually, it wasn't as bad as that but it was definitely unpleasant.
It’s enough to make you want to construct a homemade flame thrower
Question Author
I constructed a bin thrower!
Lol, I’d incinerate the bin too just to be on the safe side, lol
Was it past its Use By date Tilly?
Question Author
It was past its Best Before date, LB. It serves me right for keeping it stashed away at the back of the cupboard.

Good one, Jno!
I had a similar experience with a pack of flour, the bugs had also spread to the cupboard itself!
Question Author
That's my job for the day then, Purist. Checking the cupboard. :-(
