Film was produced by Michael Douglas, son of Kirk, who starred on Broadway in '63 and '64 as Nicholson's character.
Kirk Douglas wanted so much to play him in the film too, but Michael eventually cast and chose Nicholson instead, and, as it turned out, was a great decision. :-)
