Did he say when entering the jungle that he had to wear the neck protection at all times?
Yet during the live trial he was not wearing it. did I misunderstand?

I think it's to protect from the sun. I didn't see the show, but maybe it was not applicable at the time?

It is to protect his cancer surgery scars from the sun, so if the sun was not directly shining, I guess he could leave it off for a few minutes at a time.
