don't think so it would appear all telly needs is to be "smart " and have a usb port
maybe not even smart..it connects to wireless...someone will know for sure
conects to hdmi port..just had a peek
According to this review it looks like you do need HDTV.

Wanted to buy one for my dad for xmas he just has a small basic tv with inbuilt freeview and I don't know if a fire stick would work
probably not then....seems as per Danny's link..hd telly with hdmi port and wireless internet are the requirements

As is membership of 'Amazon Prime'
Where Amazon Fire TV Stick slightly stumbles, however, is its deep-rooted attachment to its mother service, Amazon Prime. Without Prime, the set-top stick feels devoid of personality.
Yes, you can still get those great aforementioned apps, yes you'll zip around from one section of the interface to the next thanks to its powerful components, and yes you'll even get a 30-day trial for free just for buying the streaming stick – but, after the trial runs out or you choose not to commit to Amazon's service, the whole experience feels sterile without Prime.

Lala - it might be worth checking the TV - as long as it's not very old there's a good chance it's got a HDMI in and a USB port.

Maybe you should think about getting him a new tv for Christmas? :)

Tesco have this sort of thing hanging around: http://www.tesco.com/direct/blaupunkt-32136i-32-inch-hd-ready-720p-with-freeview/747-4187.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=747-4187

The tv doesn't need a USB port. Just an Hdmi and a mains plug socket

Really hc4361? The firestick is a usb stick
Ah! For the cave! :)

///The Fire TV Stick is petite and powerful. It fits flush with most TV's HDMI ports///

From the Link I gave ^^^ above

Lala, not sure about your post @ 09:58 as I haven't mentioned the TV?
Lala, it isn't a usb stick, it connects to the Hdmi in the tv.
It's great, I've got one for quite an old TV, which isn't Smart. Just needs a HDMI port and Internet. Is a bit fiddly to use though so depends on your Dad's ability and desire to use it. My Dad would struggle due to age and not being used to technology. You don't necessarily need Amazon Prime, but it is centered around it. You would probably need something, I have Netflix. Otherwise, I think Freeview would probably do the same, unless he likes games, using Apps and YouTube etc. Purchases are required to use it properly I.e. Upgrade free Apps, Curzon movies or Amazon Prime.
