Anyone watching this programme on Beeb2 about this unbelievably humble and, dare I use the word, nice man, aged 81?

If there ever is a candidate for a knighthood, it's him - 7 bike world championships to his name, one time Formula 1, and then the loss of his son and the creation of a charity to fly blood transfusions into accidents by helicopter.

Impressive.....

Any thoughts?

If I had to be honest I had never heard of him but caught the last 5 minutes and thought I might try and watch on bbc iplayer.
I haven't seen it, DTC, but he sounds like a really deserving candidate.
Any news of your cousin?

Not seen the Prog. but I know his history, and yes, you're right it would be well deserved.

Thanks, Psybbs, I have to call my middle sis - who is up there. Been sourcing a b-day pressie for my eldest one, in Mikey country down here.

Apparently, he is still going, the question with his wife and father about when to switch off the life-support......
Oh, that is so difficult, I don't know what to say. Best wishes xx
Never heard of John Surtees !!!!!

The only man to win the world chamionship on two wheels and four (a feat that will probably never be repeated).

C'est la vie, Psybbs, I'm glad that I don't have that decision over a loved one.....experience is that it's best pulled the soonest.

Deserves a knighthood in my view, for what he achieved and that's not necessarily all those world championships in two sports.
It has a been a source of mystery to me why John Surtees has never received a Knighthood, Stirling Moss received one for services to motor racing but was never world champion. Agree with New Judge, Johns achievements will never be equalled.
If Terry Wogan,Tom Jones etc have one I am sure John Surtees deserves one,one of the greatest drivers ever.
Maybe he's been offered an honour and refused it. Does he have an mbe or something like that?

OBE I believe.....

I have e-mailed the Prime Minister's Office to propose a knighthood...perhaps others could do so as well.
Not a particular fan or motorbike racing or even car racing but I found this a really interesting programme. I agree - a very nice man. So modest and very different from the champions of more recent years. A great champion!
Just spotted an AB from November 2012, wondering why John Surtees has never recived a knighthood. Totally agree with that. He would be very worthy - much more so than a lot of sportsmen who have been knighted.

we shall see, No 10 acknowledged, but that is standard fare.....
