Co-creator of Are You Being Served? and 'Allo 'Allo, and typically played a posh Englishman in films such as Those Magnificent Men... and A Hard Day's Night.

The first time I noticed him was as the English contributor to Martin And Rowan's Laugh-in - anyone else remember him in that?

I have always been a bit mystified by the popular success of "Allow Allo" as I thought it a bit odd that the Gestapo could be viewed as comedy.

But "Are you being Served" gave us Mrs Slocum and her pussy, and for that I could forgive anything :::

Oh dear! Another loss. Yes, I remember him and particularly for Hissing Sid in Captain somebody's something which I bought for the kids - a very good tale. Once married to Joanna Lumley, I believe. Another comedic writing talent gone R.I.P..
Remembered it! 'Captain Beaky and his Band', phew!
I always liked him. He was always portrayed as the epitome of the English City Gent.
