At the party tonight, it was silly to have the Duchess asking him if he knew a family back in Ireland. There cannot be anyone unaware in their circle that their daughter had married the chauffeur. As for Annie Bates, she is bound to fall pregnant after what happened downstairs during the concert. We will have to go through the months as she tries to pass it off as Mr Bates's child.

I think it was supposed to illustrate how out of touch the Duchess was. Even though she must have heard that Tom had been the chauffeur, she had no other social chit chat other than what she would normally have said so she said it.

Great pity that Dan Stevens decided to leave.
Also I don't know the correct protocol in those days but I think Mrs Bates would have wanted him punished for attacking her,I certainly would it is not as if he was a regular downstairs person?

Exactly, well good beating up at least!
Bit harsh to blame a character given it was shown so recently after it had happened.

I can't imagine it would be a easy thing to report in those days with the shame and stigma attached and her position in society, given also the possibility of bearing a child as a result.

She also pointed out that if Mr Bates found out he would want to kill/harm the rapist and she didn't want to risk him going back to prison (or worse).
ive just watched it!

i want lovey dovey downston back as well
I can of course understand all that Eve but keeping quiet about it will change the beautiful relationship between Anna and her husband, still it will make a future storyline which will fill a few future episodes.
I like the lovey dovey too though didn't stop them finishing Matthew off after his baby was born or Lady Sybil in childbirth.

Maybe it's a throwback to the people who were saying it had got too boring!

I found it uncomfortable to watch given the programme.
Sounds like we are both romantics Eve,but then everyone likes a happy ending, don't they? Maybe not - no drama then and it probably would be boring.:0)
I thought in those days that a rape victim was labelled as "fast" no blame attached to the man, so therefore Annie wouldn't tell anyone. Yes defo a pregnancy and maybe a marriage split??
I thoroughly enjoyed last nights episode, made it more dramatic and saved it from going down the route that so many of this type of series do and get too 'comfortable'. I knew she wouldn't report it though, for the same reason as netti.
It is a jolly good series isn't it, am enjoying every moment of it.
Mr Bates's child, will that be young Master Bates?
sandyroe naughty :0)
Is it me or did I not see Mr Barrow in last night's episode? I like Mr Barrow.
I'm sure I saw him, when James couldn't hold the tray and when the naughty maid and Tom were talking?
