...has been sentenced to death.
Do the Americans not temper justice with mercy?

he killed 13 innocent citizens, why should he be given mercy.
Correct verdict imo, I think the 13 victims who were shown no mercy would agree with the ruling.
one life taken could have elicited the death penalty, so 13 people going about their lives had it taken away by this man. he could have spent the rest of his life in prison no parole, that isn't the case, why have sympathy. the families of the dead won't get any kind of reprieve.
They're not going to execute him, that takes a direct presidential intervention.
He may fall foul of ne'erdowells at some point though.

True, Emmie. They won't. But society should be able to show that it's values, and actions, are far better than any crazy murderers.
sandy, not sure i agree, i hate the death penalty, but you know if he killed my son, daughter i doubt very much i would care if he lived or died.
They do show mercy. Only 4 days ago Robert Bales was sentenced.

// The US soldier who murdered 16 Afghan villagers last year has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Staff Sgt Robert Bales, 40, opened fire on men, children and women during the attack in Kandahar on 11 March 2012. //

Seems that if you are a murderous maniac, you are better killing Afghan civilians as your sentence will be lighter.
how is life in jail with no possibility of parole a lighter sentence, he will die there, just as surely as this man, ever one to score points eh?
You think there is no difference in severity between the death sentence and life imprisonment? And that life in prison is the same as the electric chair?
Emmie,

Your comment on Stuart Hazell's sentence for Tia Sharp's murder...

// We don't have state hangings any more, for some that is more the pity. //
Electric chair Gromit? Wrong Century I think.

Right verdict I think, and for the record Gromits example(and any others) should be executed too.

Perhaps the difference Gromit is that the death penalty is easier. Life, in a pretty grim prison, without possibility of parole will definitely play on the mind. surprised you Pinko's dont call it torture.

Of course we all know you lot would love him to be out after 8 years to do it again; just like in this country.
// Electric chair Gromit? Wrong Century I think. //

17 January 2013
// The US state of Virginia has used the electric chair to put to death a man who killed two fellow prisoners to speed up his own execution. //

// we all know you lot would love him to be out after 8 years to do it again //
Of course I wouldn't. Why do you state obvious lies, is it just to be deliberately offensive or are you unable to make a valid arguement without making stuff up?
Not sure if it is right to take a life ( by shooting him )

after all - that was what he was convicted for....
Being a military court, I think they might be shooting him.

However I could be wrong - shepton mallet (Som) which is not in the US,
has a record of hanging American servicemen for .... rape.
(1947 I think)
how long did it take you to find that quote?
as to the sentence, will it happen, perhaps, but perhaps not.
you seem to want to equate everything to war and what the soldiers do, one man goes on a rampage and kills, another does the same, the military man goes to jail for life, and i suspect that is what will happen to this guy.
But if they do execute him, do you think the families of those he killed will care.

Bales pleaded guilty and contrite or not, showed remorse for his actions. His plea meant that under US Forces rules he would avoid the death penalty.

Hasan, fully aware of the previously mentioned rules chose to represent himself, then further chose not to mount any defence whatsoever, obviously aware of the repercussions of his actions.

Murder and then death by execution is, I suppose, a form of suicide.

Or martyrdom, depending on your religion.
