Jury Service

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and am unsure if this is the correct place to put my inquiry.

My question is this; I recently started my first jury service (just this Monday) and was chosen for a case. This case has now been completed and I was given the choice to stay on to potentially be chosen again for another case. I decided that I would like to stay on and complete my service fully.

I was given this choice as my employer will be paying me for the full 10 days I am due for jury (only 8 really as Friday 6th and Monday 9th are bank holidays). However as there are so few cases this week, in part because of Easter, I was informed that I would not be needed until Tuesday 10th.

Technically this means I’ll be at home doing nothing for two full days. Was I wrong to agree to stay on? It was so interesting seeing the process in this first case I would not mind the opportunity to serve on another. I am really still on jury service simply waiting to see if my name is chosen again.

If anyone can weigh in on this on where I fall really, it would be helpful.

A point to note, there was a lad there who’s job wasn’t paying for his service and they told him just to return to work on Thursday.

I don't think you were wrong to stay on.

However, it would be a courtesy to your employer to confirm that you are not needed for the two days, and to offer to return to work - they may say no, but that's their call.

I think if you're not needed for any days you're supposed to return to work until you get called up
a person where i work had to come back in at 11am when she wasn't needed! massive drive and waste of day!

So I should call in tomorrow, inform them that I won't be in court on Thursday and see what they say?

Thanks all of you for taking the time to reply.
Yes, they won't pay you for days your not required for jury service.

Ps, jury service, interesting isn't it?

Yep, so very interesting. I found myself more focused than I thought I would be, took everything very seriously. Lol a lady did fall asleep in court though, was shocked the judge never said anything.
my colleague just did jury service, she was discharged after the second week so she came back to work.
I've done two lots now, the first one was a bit uncomfortable with the defendants family and friends constantly staring us out throughout the case.

The second case the two defendants were giving me the staring treatment again so I thought "Feck em, if they want to play it that way then let's have it" ... Guilty as charged!
