Justice Secretary, the Rt Hon Ken Clarke MP, has little time for incarcerating people.
Why? Ford Open Prison, recent scene of mass rioting costing millions of pounds damage, boasts the above named luxuries for its inmates.

What, therefore, is prison actually for? How can wrongdoers be "punished" if they're living in the lap of luxury? And then they STILL riot? And guess who picks up the bill, Mr Clarke?
Something's badly wrong with our Criminal Justice system!

Most open prisons are for people that have committed minor crime/s. Or prisoners are tranferred to them as they are coming to the end of their sentences.
I rather think that any prison boasting a swimming-pool/spa complex, multiplex cinema, differing fine-dining restaurants, cells that are en-suite and carpeted complete with individually pocket-sprung mattresses and 400 thread egyptian-cotton percale bed-linen and offering both bespoke tailoring and cordwaining services could be described as offering the 'lap of luxury'.

A few pool tables and a gym are hardly in the same league.

yes.. let them break rocks in the hot sun!
Sara3, you want to send them on holidays too?
you think prison is already a holiday.. why bother?
I know that prisons are anything but holiday camps. A few pool tables won't make time there any better
I'm not sure what people expect prisoners to do for their waking hours. I don't have an issue with them playing pool for the couple of hours they're out of their cells.
I think the opinions on the question depend if you have been a victim of crime. I know people who have been victims who would not be happy that they even had a pool table.
In that prison, prisoners are allowed to go out during the day to work, it is very low security.
If they breach the rules they go straight to closed prison.
Loss of liberty is the punishment, not bread and water and hard labour.
Nice that they have en suite facilities. My husband lives in the Sgt's Mess and has to share toilet and bathrooms! Funny how Human Rights don't apply to soldiers.

En-suite facilities ???

Dear, oh dear..........

Until 'slopping-out' was banned, they had to make do with a bucket !
Kathyan, they can't go strolling down corridors to use the facilities. they are mostly confined to a cell. having somewhere to pee and poo is a pretty basic necessity.

When Ford Open Prison is refurbished after the riots I'd make sure that it would be minus these facilities.

I always avoid pubs with pool tables. Must make sure I don't get slammed up......
