A friend has been told that his wife of only 18 months is entitled to a quarter of everything he has. I wonder if anyone could advise me as to whether this sounds normsl or whether he should find another lawyer. He is 59 years old and it hardly seems right that a woman he lived with for about 4 years and then was married to for a very short time should be entitled to so much of his life savings and investments. There are no children but he is the guardian for his disabled brother. The ex wife does not play any part in his brother's life now.

Did she give up her house to live with him?
Does she work full-time?
Those are factors which would have to be considered i imagine before anyone could advise you.

She had nothing, shie is an unsuccessful artist. She has been living for free in a flat he owns while he lives in another town in another flat with his diabled brother. She brought absolutely nothing to the marriage. I am just hoping there is a lawyer out there who can tell me whether my frend needs to find a better lawyer or put up with losing a quarter of everything he has.
I do hope that someone from the legal profession sees this.I only asked those questions so there was more background to work on.
Im sure someone will answer its just a wee bit slower than CB when you post elsewhere.Good Luck in finding info for your friend.Im sorry i cant help:(

Thank you. Where else can I post?
You'll just have to be patient in here :-)

I was led to believe that you could only take out what you brought in. Any wealth gained as a married couple will be split. To what % I don't know.

Presuming she didn't really have an income how did she contribute to the household?
There's no set percentage, the judge decides when the divorce is granted. He will examine all the facts. I think this is one of those unfortunate cases where a lawyer will be necessary to protect his assets. She'll get something but I think a quarter is a bit much.
