Stolen title deeds

Knowing how very important a houses title deeds are,most people sensibly have them in the safekeeping of a bank or held by a solicitor.What if somebody decided to store them in the house and they were stolen in a burglary.Would the burglar then be able to claim ownership of the house and sell it? or is it not as simple as that and the true ownership of the house recorded with the land registry when the deeds are legitimatley exchanged between solicitors during a sale?

It's not that easy to sell a house, Dinger. It's customary for a title search to be done on a property before its sold. And the seller has to produce ID to the financial institution involved.
Title Deeds are no longer important.

In the same way as possession of a vehicle registration document does not prove ownership of a vehicle, Title Deeds do not prove ownership of a property. Ownership details are now held electronically by the Land registry and it is their records that are definitive.
deeds are no more important that bog paper in most cases, the land registry entry is what matters.
