There is an illusion at work here that the soldiers spent day after day in the trenches. the reality was that after facing the horror and slaughter, they were recalled to the rallying point for respite and then returned to the front line duty over and over again, that is the bravery shown, those boys were sent back under orders and they went, probably knowing their fate. It was modern warefare compared to the Crimea and the Boer War, fought in a small geographical area compared to earlier wars.
