Can you be found guilty and sentenced without being there?

Hi my sisters fiance whom i believe to be a con man is now claiming amonst many tall tales that he has been found guilty of fraud in his native canada and that he needs �500 pounds for his flight back to start his 11 month sentence and doesnt know when or if he will be allowed back.He has wiped her out cash wise but for her sake ive bitten my tongue.Am i jumping to conclusions or could this scenario be true ?

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me.
I'm sure the authorities would arrange his flight for him !!!
I would have thought that if he had a court case coming up and didn't appear, then they would have issued a warrant for his arrest. If that is the case then i'm sure they'll be happy to fly him back.

sounds like he's trying to pull a fast one.
I doubt they'd have let him flown back to the UK if he had been sentenced to jail for fraud unless convicted in his absence by some strange scenario.

Sounds like he might end up in jail sometime soon anyway though.

Hmmm, the cheapest flight I can see to Canada is over �600 - if he has wiped her cash out already, from where is she supposed to get this �500?

Personally, I think I might find the money myself just to get rid of him for 11 months and then go all out to introduce her to some lovely single, pay their own way, men

He didn't go back for the trial but is willing to go back to start a prison sentence.
