I have just received a letter from a debt collecting agency who say that I owe 1,600 to E.on (formely Powergen) for a previous address for years 2005/2006. I am shocked as you can imagine!!! I do recall being with Powergen at my previous address but were paying them on a monthly standing order or direct debit, not quite sure which. I have not kept a record of my final meteor reading as it was three years ago.

Anybody any ideas as to what I can do??

Thanks in advance

Call them and try and work out what period it related to, whether you were there, whether you paid for all you used and go from there.

contact Consumer Focus ( used to be Energy Watch ) They will be able to give you advice.

E.on are members of The Energy Retail Association, they agreed to a new code of practise, which says that where a supplier is at fault for not billing a customer, they will not backdate a bill more than one year. /Energy_Help___Advice/Your_energy_question/You r_energy_question.aspx

Thanks Jafi for your link, it was most helpful.
Hi - how did you get on this in the end?

I have had a similar bill from British Gas for Electricty in a house I moved out of 2 years ago and have settled the bill for.

Any advice on what to do next?
