Prior to my 50th birthday in November i am planning a number of personal challenges, ie, 50 mile walk, 50 mile bicycle ride, 50 milehorse ride etc. I hope to raise some money through sponsorship for charities of my choice. My question is - am i legally required to contact the charities concerned to obtain permission to raise money on their behalf or do i just simply send on a cheque upon completion of my challenges? Thanks....

Are you intending to keep any of the money raised for your own purposes, ie. expenses, food etc?

No, not at all, all monies raised will go to the charities concerned, all my 'challenges' will be self funded. tnx looneytunes.
It would be best if the charities knew about this before as you may find someone checking up on you. They may wish to be sure that any money would go to the right place as there have been stories in the past about bogus collectors - not that I am suggesting that you would be one of them.

Sponsorship events are different from others where people are collecting from the public. It is assumed tht those sponsoring will know the person collecting the money and that is fine. Common sense suggests that you should tell the charities in advance, not only that but people will be more willing to give if they know what for. If you are collecting as you go, you will need permissions from each local authority and theyn tell them afterwards what you did with the money. That money may not always be granted.
