I have a house that was leasehold but I purchased the lease 15 years ago. I have a receipt from the freeholder but I understand that this needs to be registered with Land Registry. The original owner cannot be traced and the remaining plots in the street which are still leasehold have been sold on to a company.
Should my original receipt be sufficient to rgister this or do I need to trace the original owner and how can I do this as the remaining plots that were unsold have since been sold on to a new landlord.I want to sell my house soon but I think that this could cause a problem. Can anyone please advise the course of action I need to follow.
Thank you

Without seeing your paperwork and particularly what is on your receipt and assessing whether it is likely that it is bona-fide it is not possible to give any useful answer through AB. You should write to your local District Land Registry Office with your story, enclosing copies of all the paperwork upon which you intend to rely and asking whether it is sufficient for a formal application by you to be Registered as Sole Proprietor is likely to succeed. Be aware that the LR Registrar's are Senior Solicitors and can and do instigate criminal charges if they think that someone is trying it on.

I shall write to Land Registry tomorrow - thank you.
Not at all. Once you have the OK from the Land Registry you will have to sort it out with the Stamp Duty Land Tax Office as the LR require a Certificate from the SDLT before they can do anything. To do this telephone 0845 6030135, but there is no point in stirring them up before you have the OK from the LR.
