driving an untaxed vehicle

i noticed on thursday that the lorry i drive at work tax ran out 31/03/07 what is the penalty for me and my employer and can i refuse to take the vehicle on the road on tuesday

Driving with no tax has a penalty of a maximum �1000 fine, no points and no disqualification.
You are not only within your rights to refuse to take the vehicle out, you are acting professionally and properly.
It may be the case though that the new tax is sitting in a drawer at the workplace.
You can use this link to check whether or not the vehicle has current tax. You will need the make and registration number:

but the police/vosa will check with dvla to see if the vehicle has been roadtaxed if it has been roadtaxed but the disc not been given to you
you will be warned to get it displayed as soon as possible then if you are seen with the vehicle again with no disc you will be charged
but one question i will ask you are you a driver that goes away from your homebase overnight a lot or are you a local driver
if you are a local driver then you should have been given the disc before it expired
but if you were away from base before you could get the disc then you have to display it as soon as possible
and ps I am speaking from experience as ~I have been in the same position as a hgv driver myself

i only drive locally i am sure the company have probably taxed the vehicle but its just not the sort of thing you really should have to check not owning the vehicle you just expect it to be taxed after all you cant really demand to see mot certificates and insurance documents before you drive a company vehicle
if it is a hgv vehicle the mot certificate is attached to the side of the vehicle usually inside the passenger compartment
but it is your duty as a driver that the vehicle is roadworthy :ie tyres, condition of the said vehicle, roadtax,operators licence (�30 fine if not displayed) and to check the fuel ,lights,and anything else you can think of
