heya everyone im in a bit of a rush at the mo! can somebody give me 10 quick basic (but interesting) facts about the european union?

We applied to join (UK) in 1961

In 1975 a referendum is held in the United Kingdom and confirms our membership.

6countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherland) sign treaty to run their heavy industries � coal and steel � under a common management so none can on its own make the weapons of war to turn against the other

25 March 1957
Treaty of Rome signed to create the European Economic Community (EEC), or �common market�.

30 July 1962
The EU starts its �common agricultural policy�.

1 July 1968
The 6 remove customs duties on goods imported from each other and apply the same duties on their imports from outside countries.

24 April 1972
EU members decide to allow their currencies to fluctuate against each other only within narrow limits. This exchange rate mechanism (ERM), created in 1972, is a first step towards the introduction of the euro, 30 years later.

1 January 1973
Denmark, Ireland and the UK join.

7�10 June 1979
EU citizens directly elect the members of the European Parliament for the first time.

1 January 1981
Greece joins.

1 January 1986
Spain and Portugal enter.

17 February 1986
The Single European Act of 1986 launches a vast six-year programme.

Afer the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 Germany is united after more than 40 years, and its eastern part joins the EU (October 1990).

7 February 1992
The Treaty on European Union is signed in Maastricht. Under the treaty, the name �European Union� officially replaces �European Community�.

The single market and its four freedoms are established.

The Schengen Agreement takes effect in Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Signature of the Treaty of Amsterdam.

13 December 1997
EU leaders agree to start the process of membership negotiations with Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The Mediterranean islands of Cyprus and Malta are also included. In 2000.

1 January 1999
The euro is introduced in 11 countries (joined by Greece in 2001).

1 January 2002
Euro notes and coins arrive.

1 May 2004
The Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia join. Bulgaria and Romania are due to follow in 2007. Croatia and Turkey are also candidates for membership.

29 October 2004
The 25 EU countries sign a Treaty establishing a European Constitution. It also creates the post of a European Foreign Minister.
Ah...

1. When Bulgaria and Romania join next year, the EU will have a population of half a billion.

2. Although the EU represents only 7% of the world�s population, it accounts for a fifth of global imports and exports.

3. The annual per capita GDP in the EU is approximately UAH 135,000 (EUR 22,000).

4. Almost three quarters of the EU workforce is employed in the services industry.

5. Approximately 90% of businesses and 50% of households in the EU have internet access.

6. Almost three quarters of the EU�s budget is spent on agriculture and on developing the poorer regions of the Union.

7. More than a million students have taken advantage of the ERASMUS programme to study abroad.

8. Last year, EU countries donated more than UAH 9 trillion (EUR 1.4 trillion) in worldwide humanitarian aid.

9. The EU is Ukraine�s most important trading partner. It is also Ukraine�s largest donor: since 1991, the EU has spent nearly UAH 14 billion (EUR 2.3 billion).

10. Of these, UAH 3.5 billion (EUR 580 million) have been spent on nuclear safety, including the Chernobyl Shelter Fund.
