Ibiza boy. I totally understand how you feel. If it were me I would challenge her. I have worked in situaion where the boss chose her staff from her friend, and the rest were not really cared about. If you work in a a shop which is part of a chain then I would be calling admin at the central office to find out your position in this. I wouldnt stand for it. If you let this...

probably depends on how much you value your job
Question Author
that,s a stupid response. so if i was about to catch a flight away on that day you,re saying cancel it and go in to keep your job.!!!
I hope you and your colleagues have representation to help you in this issue .
Question Author
no we have no representation at all. we just don,t get how we can be told it,s compulsory when you don,t work on sundays, how you,re about to start a holiday that day and that it,s not company wise just our store. Whats even more frustrating is that the store is closed the very next two days to relay so there,s plenty of time for a 2 hour meeting.!
my answer might not be as stupid as you think it is. Whatever the legal perspective is, would going in for 2 hrs be worse than being seen as a trouble maker or not a team player? How long have you worked there? How secure is your job? I'm not suggesting you just comply with stuff for the sake of it, but jobs are very hard to come by ATM, and if there is a choice of who goes or stays, if i was a boss, i'd probably want to keep people who'd made an effort to comply, rather than spout law at me, or get legal advice over the (not particularly) unreasonable things they ask me to do. if there's a really good reason you cant do it (rather than just dont want to) then tell her
It depends what your contract is with the employment.

If there is no contract, written or verbal, that specifies you have to go in for training then you would have the right to say no and you should consider claiming unfair dismissal if they threaten your job.
Been there, done it, did it. Just get it done and move on. No big issue.

Bednobs, i hear what you are saying but it still does not answer the question. on that Sunday 2 members of staff will start a holiday. are they really supposed to abandon it and go in for 2 hours.?
also ( as i have just checked a law site online) you are protected from sunday working if you opted out and , it says, " you cannot be treated less favorably, dismissed or disciplined. " also we are not talking about one person here either.
Sundays are Sundays regardless ...........
call in sick
ibiza what work are involved in ?
Just say no, you have plans.
lol tell them you have a date with Jesus and no way can you work on the sabbath
Its not work, you say it is training. It seems they think you are worth training than getting rid of. But the choice is yours.

Davebro........Don, t need to call in on a day i don,t work.
Bobbisox1. work in retail. the boss has divided staff members, half come from where she used to work ( and are her friends) the other half are the original staff from the store ( whom she chooses not to like as much)
David small...........useless response.
I sincerely wish you good luck Ibiaza
Is the store part of a chain or franchise. What does your contract say. Is she the manager or boss
Question Author
Calmck. it,s part of a chain. i,ve opted out of sundays ( been there 11 years) so i don,t have to go in. and she,s the store manager. there is an area manager above her and a company boss.
i get everyone,s responses but the big picture is whats law. not whats peoples opinions. x
What is law? We need to know more about your employment contract.
Question Author
Needtoknowplease. In response to your question, i have already stated that i have never worked sundays and opted out from day one. the law states that if you have opted out you are protected.
well there you go then, good luck
