How difficult would it be to have all cars fitted with a radio controlled cut-out device that police could activate with a short range directional transmitter? That way they could stop any car they wanted to before a chase got going.

Such a device could be employed by carjackers and other criminals so it would be extremely difficult.
Very difficult, i would imagine. If someone is intent on breaking the law, they are hardly likely to have such a device fitted in their vehicle.
And any device and be disabled - there are enough trucks with their speed limiters disabled.
Sounds like a dam good idea Davebro.
This already exists in America. The device is built into the car chassis, virtually impossible to get access to it. When the car is stolen the owner alerts the company that makes the device who activates it. They can immediately locate the car and inform the police. When the police drop in behind the car they inform the company when the car is in a safe place and they in turn can control the car and bring it to a safe stop and lock the doors.
^^^^ great could they also close all the windows and fill it with Halon gas?
TTT, I believe that's an optional extra :o).
the only problem I see is that if the device goes wrong, the car is useless.
How come there are so many videos of high speed police chases in America?
Saw something about this the other day. I believe the police(US) are demanding/asking they be incorporated in all auto-driven cars.
Another reason for TTT not to like them.
he needs ANOTHER reason?
He won't be allowed to drive if 'his' covid passport becomes a reality. ;)
How little my view on self driving cars is understood. I love the idea self driving cars, I just don't think they'll ever be viable. When I can get in my car, get it to take me round a load of pubs and a curry house and take me home rat arissed and any death and destruction it causes is not my fault then they will be viable, ie never.
^^^^ anything short of that serves no purpose, you may as well drive yourself.
Interesting idea but thinking about it,there could be dangers if a driver suddenly lost their power anything could happen. I dont think in the UK we get a great many high speed police chases.

Don't you?????

The Paramount TV channel manages to fill vast swathes of its airtime showing programmes devoted to nothing else, and they cover only two forces - Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

It appears that high speed chases are the only thing traffic patrol officers spend their time doing all day and night.
