While travel between tiers is banned for us mere mortals, elite footballers can visit tier 4 when everyone else is forbidden for safety reasons.

Now, after a visit to London, several Manchester City players have tested positive for covid and their game tonight has be postponed.

// City played Arsenal in the EFL Cup at Emirates Stadium on 22 December, by which time London had been put in Tier 4, and City have been told positive cases have subsequently been reported at the hotel they were staying in. //

Time to close this loophole ?

///Time to close this loophole ?///
Definitely. There really shouldn't be one rule for some and not for others. People go to London (tier 4) get the Covid, bring it back to Manchester ( tier 3) it's just not on.
No.

It isn’t a “loophole”
Keeping football going is an important morale booster for many.
It's not a loophole. There working, are tested very regular and work in bubbles like tv presenters/ entertainers do. Maybe some are stepping out a line but are quickly detected by testing
dam savages should be thrashed to within an inch of their lives!
It’s annoying for Manchester City I’m sure but there have been lots of Covid cases among footballers. They get tested regularity, are all young and fit and the chances of them passing it on I’d thought very small
We all have things in our lives that boost our morale, Ichkeria.

My Fiddling with Fabric classes, Willow Weaving and Irish language lessons boosted my morale, and the morale of lots of us, more than football does.
We gave up those as our contribution to trying to bring this virus to an end. Football should do the same.
And stop most tv programs too guess where they travel to studios??
The difference is that “we” aren’t “doing” elite sport.
We are watching it.
Bobbinwales has explained why it’s low risk.
Fussing about Man City players testing positive feels a bit pointless. The thing is out of control and had been for a long time. No one’s fault. We must just try to cope as best as we can. It’s large crowds of people at events that needs to be controlled and we’ve done that. As soon as a system for managing the elite sports was put in place then that could continue as normal. There are other jobs which entail travel as well
19:12 so is seeing family and friends and going to the theatre - why is football so special ??
Because it’s controlled. As explained.
And a low risk compensation for not having to visit those awful relatives etc
As long as people are happy to allso cancel programmes like strictly and filming of coronation street, lbc radio, schools...
It feels quite wrong that travelling across tiers is allowed in the name of football. It may be controlled, but so are many things. It doesn't boost my moral to know that this sport can continue when so many other activities, sports and businesses cannot.
And we all know how well footballers behave and obey rules.
Saying it shouldn’t happen
“just because I can’t/shouldn’t do it” is an understandable reaction but misplaced.
It’s the same thinking that caused the Welsh government to ban the sale of “non-essential” goods in supermarkets a while back.
Indeed the non essential goods should be closed off. Otherwise people with nothing better to do, go browsing around supermarkets when other retailser selling these goods are closed.

If we are in lockdown, it should be food, chemists, and essential household items only for sale.
I am not saying just because I can't or shouldn't.

I am saying it's and dangerous and very unnecessary risk which will contribute to a delay none of us should have to live with for the sake of football.....football????
Plainly it isn’t dangerous.
This is a good example of test and trace being able to work effectively in a controlled environment. As soon as a case is discovered more tests and postponements follow.
“ Indeed the non essential goods should be closed off. Otherwise people with nothing better to do, go browsing around supermarkets when other retailser selling these goods are closed. ”

That rather dubious reason tho wasn’t the one the Welsh government came up with.
I prefer cases not to have to be discovered for something as unnecessary as this. That is too late for those they have infected.
Yes, stop the football...I'll take up knitting or online train-spotting to pass the time.
