Husband and I are separating and he’s been told (by a solicitor) that I am not entitled to a share of any pensions he became deferred/preserved in before we started cohabiting. I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on something I could be entitled to.

I suggest you ask a solicitor who you appoint yourself. Everybody's circumstances are different and you need somebody to go over the finances of you and your husband.
you make sure of that by getting and paying a solicitor to represent you.

actually sounds correct to me BUT - you know I cd be a walk in street cleaner for chrissakes - or a struck off solicitor !

Sounds reasonable to me. Would of been different if he'd paid in to them while you were together. Maybe worth getting your own advice from CAB or solicitor tho

I am going to say get proper advice and it depends on what else there is and how its divided...the fact that he accrued it before your marriage doesn't necessarily mean he gets to keep it.
much more complicated than we thought
