So the new rules say no gatherings of more than 6. (Except for work, school and things such as funerals weddings etc)

So does anyone know does this affect pubs, restaurants, hairdressers etc? Can more than 6 people “gather” over a pint etc?

I think it starts from Monday, so get your bigger gatherings in before then. Ok, three more days for people to potentially spread the virus. Jeez.

You can’t gather ‘for fun’. You can gather for a wedding or funeral. OMG, you couldn’t write this stuff.
Boris says today, its the publics own fault for ignoring his advice.
no I doesn't affect pubs and restaurants. you can only gather with 5 other people (in your group) but more than 1 group can go to a pub or out to eat
It is completely the fault of the public.
Forget graphs, statements and high flown pontificating by Aber "intellectuals" and just bet outthere and see what is happening.
The oldies are wearing masks and following personal 2 metre distancing and the " young "are NOT.
Iis that simple as to why the number of cases are rising almost exponentially....it is that simple and the negative attitude shown by many, including jntelligent ABers to the part played quarantine.
Yes, blame the aGovernment, but the public must accept the
major portion of blame.
Forget Christmas.
Sqad - well said sir. Agree totally.
I have to say I've seen plenty of kids distancing and plenty of adults not (though not oldies like me, we're always careful... or "paranoid" and "ridiculous" as some would call it).
The rules inside pubs and restaurants haven't really changed.

The maximum group size was already set at 6, to include members of no more than two households (with a 'unique social bubble' permitted to be counted as a single household). It's out in the pub garden where the maximum number of people in a group has been cut from thirty to six.
//The maximum group size was already set at 6//
Why not 5 or 7?
Figures plucked out of thin air and everybody goes along with it?
Every country has a different take on it just like they do with the ''Eat 5 a day'' carp. Some countries suggest 10 a day, others less.
But people like to be sheep and told what to obey.
I’m trying to decide who to kick out of the house in order to comply.
Don't do it then - your choice.
Good point Sherr :-)

Because in different situations, indoor / outdoors, well ventilated / stuffy, large / small room, the number would be different. So, as this government tends to do, they chose a number that they can attach a snappy slogan to - remember the "rule of six".
//Don't do it then //
Dont do what?
Okay nailit. Suppose it was 7 - then why not 8, then why not 9.
Lines have to be drawn somewhere.
And I'm sure there is some logic in 6. It's adequate for most families and maybe a grandparent/cousin for example. Four for example would have been 2 restrictive. 5 would have been seen as an odd number.

You've heard of the birthday probabilities problem-.. Put 4 random starngers together and ther's little chance any 2 will share a birthday. Put 23 together and there's a 50% chance. I suspect 12 people is a lot more twice as risky as 6 people.

Where would you draw the line?
Don't abide by the new rules by being a sheep.
Yes- although it's law not rules. Of course if you choose to break the law on this the police may just warn/advise you if you respond politely, apologise and move on. Could you do that?
//Mamyalynne Don't abide by the new rules by being a sheep//
I could be a sheep in England but not in Australia??
Which country do you want me to be a sheep in?
One that doesn't make you cross.
I saw the briefing and part of the reason for change seems to be to simplify because people were finding the roolz complicated so now its six anywhere apart from weddings, funerals, sports matches, work or school and in those cases either 2m distancing or 1m+ must be followed plus the venue must be covid secure.

I mean its not come out of the blue...all along they have been clear that a change in infection circumstances would result in appropriate changes in the rules. Did anybody REALLY think "oh it will be all over by christmas"?
