Take it all the way would be my suggestion, why should you be responsible for their slipshod/sharp practices.

You have a stamped-up receipt for money paid in. If that doesn't match the amount credited to your account then they either counted it wrongly or someone in the bank stole some of it. I don't see they have a leg to stand on.
Which incompetent bank was this?
roBBY are you in the UK?
I once paid in £400 - never paid attention to the recipt.

Got home to find the bank had phoned - they'd paid in £4000.

Just had to go back the next day to authorise the withdrawal.
Do you mean LITERALLY stamped? I haven’t had a stamped receipt for years from a bank. It’s a little printout slip now, if anything at all.
I don’t see how they can prove that you underpaid. An employee made a mistake. Their problem. What are they asking you to do?
The stamped receipt was why I asked if the OP was in the uk
Do you feed the money into the machine , when you pay it in ?
A few month ago when there were more restrictions, I queued up outside a bank to pay in a cheque.

A member of staff come out to ask what we there to do and when I gave my reason, he took my cheque and returnt with the stamped stub of a paying-in slip.
THECORBYLOON, I did this too except I used my paying in book. Following day I happened to check my balance at the ATM outside the bank and noticed it hadn't been paid in. Luckily the same girl was outside bank and went in to check what had happened as she had given the cash and book to the one behind the counter and the book was stamped and signed. Came out five minutes later and said money was now in account and she had never heard of this before. She did say she was very sorry for it happening but since then I always check after doing this. A small amount I may not have noticed but this was in the hundreds.
follow the complaints procedure
good luck
Hi Robby are you absolutely sure its their mistake and not yours?

sorry cant name the bank at present as Im seeking legal advice ready to sue. It was a cash payment over the counter. Paying in slip was from my paying in book, it was stamped with what I believe was the correct amount after the cashier counted it. It was shown as the correct amount when I checked the account online later, but the account also showed the bank had removed the original figure and put in a significantly reduced amount. they only contacted me hours after the in-payment and then only to tell me.
Have you exhausted the Bank's complaints procedure and had no joy from the Financial Ombudsman already?

I ask because you say you are planning to sue.
Stand I the bank and tell every customer who queues what happened to you, in a loud voice.

I bet the bank manager would rapidly get it sorted.

Have the number for the local paper handy, and if they threaten to call the police to have you removed, start to ring.
You say that the bank person counted the money and signed the slip and agreed with the amount that you wished to deposit.

This amount was deposited into your account then withdrawn and a lesser amount deposited.

To me, the bank has not 'lost' your money and they seem not to dispute the amount that you deposited. However, it may be that there was a problem with the actual money deposited. Could some of it be fake (or whatever the word is)?

What did they say when they phoned you? You really need to have a proper talk with the bank manager.

update. The bank have still not acknowledged or answered my formal complaint despite numerous emails, phone calls and letters to the bank and its head office. Disappointingly, I find that my better option rather than to issue a summons (which would be quicker) I now have to take it to the Ombudsman which is what I will do. Meanwhile the bank still has my cash... and no (Wolfe) there is no question of fake notes or any kind of fraud on my part - it seems the bank can simply ignore its own rules, procedures and legal obligations as and when it feels like. I will not be letting this go - the amount is too high to even consider.
are you 100% sure it's their mistake?
how long ago was it? They have 8 weeks usually in which to answer our complaint, so you might be jumping the gun
