My son is still at work in a factory - they are not essential. He will only get £90 per week if he doesn’t go in yet 80% of his salary if he waits for them to send him home
Is this right?

Not really. Presumably the £90 a week you mention is SSP if he goes off sick. If he stays where he is he will get paid until they send him home. The may choose to pay him100% of his salary, although that seems unlikely. or they might dismiss him or send him home without pay. Or they may take up the 80% govt subsidy for furloughed workers and they could opt to pay some or all of the remaining 20%
If he's off sick at the time he is furloughed he'll still be entitled to the 80% figure as far as I can see although it depends whether the reference period is Feb as suggested or covers the period when he was off so he'd get less.

Sorry but I don’t understand your answers - could you explain them to me in a little more detail
BTW - thank you for taking the time to reply
Sorry. Maybe the BBC and Chancellor explained it better

What does the £90 figure represent? Is he sick but thinking of working or is it a strategic sickness to avoid (understandably) having to work because his employer is telling him to work?

Okay found a little bit more now
It seems if he doesn’t go in he will only receive SSP - the 80% only applies if his employer applies for it and for some reason they haven’t!
Haven’t watched the link yet
Again thanks for responding
Nothing to watch in my link. It's just an article entitled:
Coronavirus: Wages, sick pay and time off explained.
Well worth reading.
Employers don't have to apply but any that want to retain their staff for when the layoff period ends and do the best for them should apply to HMRC if they have the resources to do so
