Conflicting answers on a search. Does a car need to be insured before driving it away from a dealer. Does your existing insurance cover it if you have let your Insurance know the cars details.

If your insurance covers you for any car then your OK.
That of course should read road. If your Insurance co has agreed to cover the car and you have paid the premium it is insured
Very very few policies will cover you to drive any car. Mine for example covers me to drive other cars that don't belong to me under tp only
Some dealers have a temporary insurance cover available, perhaps for a week, to cover you until you arrange your own cover.

Simple answer from my experience is that your insurance will cover you if your insurers have said that you are covered. Last time I bought a car, my insurers set up a day's overlap to cover taking my old car to the dealer and bringing home the new one. So far as I recall, they said that insurance on my old car would cease when I no longer owned it and insurance on the new car started at the beginning of the working day on which I was collecting it.
From a dealership, they usually give you temporary insurance, but they will tell you that. Best to ask the dealership.
Speak to your Broker/Insurers and ensure that cover for the new car has been placed, and confirm that the Motor Insurance Database will be updated for the date that you collect the car.

I once had to placate a customer, and obtain compensation from the insurer, in a case where he bought his wife the same model of a new car each year, but the insurer made a mistake one time updating the MID. Using ANPR the car was flagged up as being uninsured the following week. The police had it removed and impounded, charging over £200 for it's release.
