Wide Vehicles, Narrow Lane

Hi
Does anyone know (or can give me references to) the laws relevant to vehicle width? I ask because recently I have had every thing from a lime spreader to a combine along my lane. The combine was riding entirely on the banks rather than the road and as a result, the banks and drainage cuts are destroyed. This is an adopted road and can be classed as an ancient highway. (Just before all the Trolls have a go about townies, I have lived in the country all my life and on this lane for 25 years). Tractors and trailers used to be smaller! h

Scrivens, many thanks for your answer, that is a usefull document. I am still trying with the highways but Norfolk C.C. have not issued any such advice so far as I can find.
Use this form to contact them to report the damage caused by the combine. Do you know who it belongs to? That information would help.

Good luck.

Just became the odd guy who rushes out with the camera.
This may or may not help. Abnormal indivisble loads carried ON another vehicle come under the following regulations.
http://www.highways.gov.uk/specialist-information/abnormal-loads/information-for-hauliers/abnormal-indivisible-loads-guide/abnormal-indivisible-loads/
However, if I remember correctly, Agricultural Vehicles are exempt from these regulations. Basically, if they can get it down the lane, they are allowed to! Yes, you are right. Tractors, combines etc have got bigger over the last few years. The bigger they are, the more efficient they are...until they hit something!!
They may be exempt from certain regs, but surely do not have Carte Blanche to damage drains etc?
When I was on HGVs Norfolk, there was places that used to test your judgement, but you had to use your experience to the HGV Your were driving, the easiest way I found, get off your @rse walk down the so-called lane or ask before you even got to the area, it's as simple as that, we had a depot at Claxton in your area, but that was no probs as it was the old road from Norwich through to Beccles.
