My wife and I split up 20 months ago, wih me moving out to rented accommodation until the split is finalised and the house sold. She has informed the council she is the sole adult occupier of the house, which is still in joint names and for which I currently pay the mortgage. Who is responsible for paying the council tax? I do at the moment dip from my account though it is under her name, but I now want to stop paying as she seems to be able to afford to go out and socialise where as I am paying double bills.....hers and mine. Where do I stand? Thanks for any advise.

She is the occupier so she pays the council tax
She pays it for the house she is living in. As she is the sole occupier, she will get a reduced rate.
You will be paying your own Council Tax on where you, live. No need for you to pay her CT.
You're a gentleman. Time for her to stand on her own two feet now, though. And you should sort out your bank accounts, so that you each have your own under your own names.

Thank you all for your answers. Have paid for most things since the split but too many people have said I am a soft touch and time to think of myself. Always had separate accounts so that is one less thing to worry about! Have a good weekend all.
