I was wondering if it would be OK to take my dog into my local. I mean it is well behaved besides I have seen other dogs in pubs - but I'm not too sure really. Is there a law or is it just for the landlord/lady? Many thanks.

It is down to the landlord, we take ours in some pubs but not others. No laws.

Up to the landlord, ask him!

I've been in pubs where they have their own resident cat or dog, so I would imagine that there's no actual law against it.

Just ask the landlord/lady first!
It is up to individual landlords in pubs where there is no food service.
There are no laws prohibiting dogs in pubs. (Some people regard having dogs in food service areas as possibly contravening food hygiene regulations but, once again, there's no specific legislation; having a dog in a food service area doesn't actually break any law).

Most of the big chains (e.g. J D Wetherspoon) ban dogs [other than registered assistance dogs] from their premises but, unless there's such a company policy in place, it's entirely up to the individual publican.
I was actually thinking about Buenchico - when he goes to the pub his cat tries to go with him.
check
otherwise you may have to tie the dog up outside
he'll have to go outside if he fancies a fag
Your dog is more likely to be welcome in a country pub, or one on a good walking route. But there are no laws, just phone ahead.
It is (as has been said) up to the Landlord ... and there is no specific prohibition in law on dogs in food service areas either.

There are some areas of the country (hello Central Shropshire amongst others) where some absolute nut-job of an environmental health officer has effectively barred dogs from all [i pubs serving [i] any ] food (even sandwiches and pork pies) - but they are acting way beyond their legal powers and hopefully will be slapped down eventually.
aelmpvw - a cigarette smoking beagle.... I hadn't thought of that.
That's no way to describe your wife.
Whilst there may be no law against it, there's plenty of people who who find it incredible that dogs have to be taken absolutely everywhere with their owners.

I know people get attached to their pets, but really, do they have to go everywhere with them?
my dog only accompanies me if i'm going for a walk ... which means passing a pub
Piero, out miniature poodle, comes to lots pubs and restaurants with us, and he hasn't come to any harm yet.
What is annoying though is that he isn't allowed into museums - I can't see why - so we have to go into exhibitions alternately.

Thank you everybody. I am aware of what I need to do now. Most reassured. Thanks.
I love pubs that allow you to take your dog. Always found them to be exceptionally friendly.

Went out for a meal one evening (without our dogs) to a Seafront place in Minnis Bxx, had a table booked, was seated, looked around, the two Ladies of a certain age at the next table had a largish dog with them sitting up at the table with it's own chair and plate.
Will not be going there again.
I agree with Viv, there's something welcoming about a pub that lets people bring their dogs in, never take mine with me though, he's too naughty.

Baldric, I wouldn't fancy that either.
I've never seen a badly behaved dog in a pub, but I've seen lots of badly behaved children, the parents of whom have done nothing to prevent them from spoiling other peoples pleasure.
