How can it be treated as a hate crime, when the motive for placing the item near the Mosque remains unclear?

When one reads some of the readers comments, it put on an entirely different meaning to the story, than some would have us believing.

"a small home-made explosive device"

Maybe they were considering whether it is a one off hate crime or might need status uprated to "terrorist plot".

sorry, i have no idea what you are talking about
The police treat things as say "suspicious" all the time, before finding out through investigation that they aren't. thereofre something can be treated as a hate crime, before investigations proceed to find out if it is or isn't. Best to treat something as the worst possible scenario, than think it's all ok then find out it isnt i suppose
If it were a small bomb placed, say, inside a pig's head, it would be pretty obvious as a hate crime against Islam, surely?

Well let me try and put it clearer, example: "the police are treating it as a 'RACIST' crime, but don't know why this person attacked the black person"

Seems obvious to me it was because he was 'BLACK'.

So the same applies here "the police are treating it as a 'HATE CRIME', but don't know what the motive was for placing it near the Mosque".

Also seems obvious it was 'HATED' towards those in the Mosque.

Not necessarily, what if it was placed outside a church?
-- answer removed --
Crimes committed against someone because of their disability, gender-identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation are hate crimes.

Are you confusing the classification with motivation?
A pig's head isn't a forbidden item in the church, AOG, that was my point - parts of a pig blowing into the mosque (or a Jewish meeting place) would cause consternation.
"We are treating it as a murder but we are not clear about the motive" Does that make sense to you , aog?

With that it in mind, reread your quote. Do you understand now? At the simplest level "why this mosque" or "why this mosque at this time"

Yes but I was just answering your previous post,

/// If it were a small bomb placed, say, inside a pig's head, it would be pretty obvious as a hate crime against Islam, surely? ///

where you mentioned nothing about Mosques.

Not the same at all, one is an action committed for what purpose?

And the other is an action but questioning the location?
I've read the link, but I'm lost. What does a pig's head have to do with this? Did I miss something?
nothing, naomi, it was a "what if" scenario....
All right, "What was his motive, his reason, for picking on a mosque and this one in particular?" Does that make it easier for you, aog?
Oh, right. :o/
AOG, Unless it was inadvertently mislaid by a Muslim bomber, the motive for leaving it close to a mosque must be rather suspect, wouldn't you say? I can't imagine many people place bombs with no specific intention.

No because even the police say the motive for placing the item near the Mosque remains unclear?

I will now get off this round-a-bout now because I am getting rather bored.
Just as well, aog, since you've answered your own question

/// The device exploded on Friday evening after residents in the Caldmore area of Walsall heard a loud bang similar to a firework. ///

/// The following morning the remains of the bomb were found by a local man in an alleyway adjoining the Aisha Mosque and Islamic Centre in Rutter Street. ///

/// Unaware of what the item was, he took it home and showed it to his
wife. ///

/// The mosque’s imam also later took the device's remains home before anyone realised their significance and contacted the police. ///

/// Around 150 people were evacuated from their homes on Saturday night while bomb disposal experts made the device safe. ///

To summarise:

The 'device' exploded on Friday night, the remains were found by a local man who took it home to show his wife, then the mosque’s imam also later took the device's remains home, and later contacted the police, then it took the police until Saturday night to evacuate 150 people from there homes, while bomb disposal experts made the already exploded remains 'safe'?

Do things sound altogether right about this affair?
