It's not the source of the music which is the issue, pixi, it's who hears it. We were forbidden to play the radio in our office because people walking by in the street could hear it (it's a bit draconian, but there you are). I think then that the Performing Rights licence is only about a tenner a year, so it would be worth your friend getting a licence.
Any music in a public place needs a licence....

thanks murray x
That was the solution we reached with my colleague, she listened through headphones off her ipod. (personally can't stand music when I'm working, but I know other people find it helpful!)
As boxy says the licence is not much....worth getting to relieve monotony in the workplace considering the time spent there..
If your friend recorded their own musical efforts they could play that to whomever they wish. Or get friends to give permission for their efforts ? I suspect they'd have had to write the music in the first place though. They'd have to own rights to it all.

i think he said it was £300+ ..nearly £400 or something murray... hes not prepared to pay it ...guess we all going to have to stick to earphones

hi old geezer :) ..... ooh i could sing to them all day :P ...thanks
As woofie says less than 4 employees only €44 ....can't imagine there is any more than that in tat parlour ?
Perhaps that's where I got my price of a tenner from, perhaps it was a tenner per person in our office.
