I paid a cheque into a Barclays business account on Monday. I've just looked at the account online and it isn't showing up at all.

Normally when I pay cheques in they will show on the day I pay them in, although obviously not as cleared funds.

Has something changed?

Why not ask your bank?
Question Author
Because trying to speak to them is a massive pain in the behind and takes forever so thought I'd see if anyone had a quick suggestion before I tried. But I just have. And they haven't got a clue.
They probably haven't gotten around to adjusting your account

or - they fouled up using someone else account.
Question Author
They've got absolutely no record of it. I've got to give them the account details of the company who paid the cheque so they can see where if they can find it. Luckily I have the paying in slip with the cashiers stamp on it.
Was it your own paying-in slip (maybe from a paying-in book) or one of those slips available in the branch?
Question Author
From our paying in book.

So all the account details are pre-printed. (and therefore can't be my own stupid error)
So that should rule out a keying error as I assume the account details on those slips are read by a machine
Sounds like fraud to me - never trust a banker.
Question Author
I did notice the cashier didn't run it through the little machine while I was there but they often don't do it at the time, never been a problem before.
My sons bank 'lost' a cheque from my mother in their system. The first we knew was a standard letter from them saying his balance was being adjusted downwards.

Poor lad was really upset, until it was explained to him that she could write a new one.

There was no apology until I went to see the branch manager.

I'm hoping there's a very simple answer. And solution.

It's nearly £5k so not a paltry amount. Paying it in on Monday meant it should have cleared by this Friday. I'm still holding out hope that we might still have cleared funds by then.
I was wondering whether there been any progress on this, EvianBaby.

After a number of phone calls I decided to go to the bank I paid it in at. Turns out someone had put it in a cupboard and just left it there. God knows how long it would have been there if I hadn't checked the account.
They are supposed to run it through the machine immediately , not leave it lying around for later . As you have found out mistakes can happen if the procedure is not followed. I would demand that they credit your account immediately with the £5000 .

The girl I was talking to in the back looked like she was on the verge of tears when she realised what happened so I didn't push it. They told me there was no way they could make it clear any faster, all the could do was cancel it and for me to ask the customer to pay again by bank transfer. As it was only two days I decided not to hassle my customer and just got them to pay it in straight away.

Funny thing is they always try and get you to use the little letter box things for paying in cheques but I've always been sceptical about them, I'd rather wait in a queue and get the cashiers stamp. I'll definitely stick with that now, might have been a lot harder to solve if I didn't have proof I paid it in.

I would think a letter to the manager may be in order. Will you have lost out on any (paltry) interest as they ought to pay any dues owing to you.
I rarely get cheques now but when I do I pay them in at the machines as they are logged immediately.
Question Author
They don't have machines at ours, just little metal post boxes you put an envelope in.

They said we'd be refunded any charges that may occur as a result of the funds not being cleared but I don't think I'll bother with a complain letter this time. I'm sure the cashier has learnt the error of her ways.
