Ok here goes,

I was in a same sex relationship. My partner had a child while we were together. We split up 3 years ago, but I still see our son regularly. We are thinking of applying for parental responsibility for me. (late I know)

If I had parental responsibility, would I then be liable for maintenance/CSA

I hope someone understands this.
Regards.

I regret I am one of the people who do not understand your question, are you a biological parent?
Is it this case?

Hi, no i'm not the biological parent.

But my ex and I would like me to have parental responsibility as I still look after 'our' child.
The biological mother has automatic parental responsibility, as you are not a parent of the child I would apply to the court for parental responsibility to be granted. The term parental responsibility covers all rights, duties, powers and responsibilities for a child.
